Wear RED for Pentecost this Sunday, May 28
Scripture John 20:19-23
Sermon Sometimes the Spirit Speaks Softly
On Pentecost we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit—“God With Us, Here and Now.” The most familiar Pentecost story is found in Acts of the Apostles, chapter 2, when the Spirit descended on waiting disciples with fire and wind fifty days (“Pentecost”) after Easter. A lesser-known story is found here in John, when the Spirit is given quietly, calmly, by the breath of Jesus. That breath echoes Genesis 2 when God breathes life into the human being. Both stories have something profound to say about the gentle, fierce power of the Holy Spirit. On Sunday we’ll reflect on which experience is similar to yours!
Memorial Day Observance As is our tradition, at the close of worship we honor those who have given the last full measure of devotion in the service of our country. First Lieutenant Jay Packer, USMC, one of our new members, will present a memorial wreath, followed by prayer and the singing of My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.

Seventh Sunday of Eastertide, May 21
Scripture Acts 17:22-34
Sermon Message in the Marketplace
This story from the early days of the church finds Paul in Athens, speaking to a well-educated crowd with a multitude of religious beliefs—much like the religious marketplace today. How did Paul—and how do we–communicate our faith in such a competitive environment?

Fifth Sunday of Eastertide, May 7
Scripture John 14:1-14
Sermon Practice Resurrection: On the Way
Renewal of Baptism and Communion
Minute for Mission: Camp Pendleton YMCA
Return of Pledges to On a Mission From God
Renewal of Baptism and Communion Each year on the first communion after Easter, we symbolically wipe off the ashes imposed on Ash Wednesday, signs of mortality and repentance, with the waters of life in a simple ritual while receiving the bread of life. All are welcome; invite a friend!
This Sunday, May 7 we welcome Samantha Holt, director of the Camp Pendleton YMCA. The cost of living is high for everyone, especially Marines nearby on Camp Pendleton. Our support of the YMCA Emergency Food Offering provides commissary gift cards to enlisted families in crisis situations. Give online at www.Christ-Pres.Church/give/ or by check (YMCA in the memo).

Fourth Sunday of Eastertide, April 30
Scripture John 21 (selected verses)
Sermon Practice Resurrection: Restore and Renew
We continue our theme of Practice Resurrection a phrase from Wendell Berry: farmer, poet, essayist, and Christian whose words and faith have moved many. We’ll hear the story of Christ’s last resurrection appearance in the gospel of John, when Jesus speaks with Peter, the disciple who denied knowing Jesus three times on the last night of his life. How will Jesus approach his most willing, most impetuous follower?

Second Sunday of Eastertide, April 16
9:00 Contemporary Worship
10:45 Traditional Worship
Scripture John 20:19-31
Sermon Practice Resurrection
Wendell Berry is a farmer, poet, essayist, and Christian whose words and faith have moved many. One of his poems ends with the phrase, Practice resurrection. That could be a simple declaration of what it means to be a follower of the risen Christ in any time, but particularly in ours. We’ll be thinking how we might “practice resurrection” for the next six Sundays of the Easter season.

Palm / Passion Sunday, April 3
The Beginning of Holy Week
9:00 & 10:45 Palm / Passion Sunday Worship
Processional with Palms into the Sanctuary. Meet on the patio before worship.
Scripture John 18:28-38
Sermon Behold the Man
On Palm / Passion Sunday, we remember the joyful arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem for the last week of his life on his journey to the cross and beyond. The message will focus on the meeting of the prisoner Jesus with the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate. Despite the obvious power imbalance, we may be surprised to discover where the real authority lies in this encounter—and where real authority can be found in our world.
Drama Worship concludes with a drama that anticipates the later events of Holy Week.

Easter Day is the celebration of resurrection and hope, the beginning of the seven Sundays of Eastertide. To truly celebrate the joy of Easter, one must first come to the foot of the cross; we are all encouraged to worship on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, or both.
